The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

And BitTorrent’s Oscar Goes To…

In a few days the Oscar winners of 2011 will be announced, including the award for the best movie of last year. Before Hollywood starts to celebrate, we take a look at the nominees in the Best Picture category to see which film would win if every download on BitTorrent counted as a vote.

oscar torrentsThis coming Sunday, Hollywood’s biggest stars will walk the red carpet into the Kodak Theater for the Academy Awards ceremony.

In anticipation of the glamorous Oscar night, we enter the dark side of the movie business to find out which of the nominees in the Best Picture category gets the vote from BitTorrent users. In other words, which of the nominated films was downloaded the most on BitTorrent.

After crunching the numbers, taken from thousands of publicly available torrents, this awards race turned out to be an easy win for Inception. With a staggering 13,780,000 downloads Christopher Nolan’s movie was the clear winner.

The runners up for Best Picture based on the number of downloads are The Social Network and Toy Story 3 with 8,630,000 and 6,620,000 downloads respectively. Although these numbers are interesting, we have to note that the comparison is affected by release dates. Not all of the nominated films were released on BitTorrent at the same time, resulting in a bias towards older releases.

That said, there is a strong indication that Inception would remain the favored Oscar nominee among BitTorrent users if they were allowed to vote for a movie.

BitTorrent indexer BTarena has been running an Oscar poll for the last three years where visitors can vote for their Oscar favorites across various categories. In this poll, which went live just a few days ago, Inception is also in the lead with 33 percent, followed by 127 Hours and Toy Story with 12 percent each.

Aside from picking the Best Picture, BTarena visitors can also pick their favorites in the other categories. Currently, James Franco (127 Hours) is leading the Best Actor category while Natalie Portman (Black Swan) is leading as the Best Actress with half of all votes.

The founder of BTarena told TorrentFreak that he decided to start the Oscar torrents project after the OscarTorrents site went down in 2007. “Oscar winners should be voted on BitTorrent too, right? Not only by a few Hollywood people,” he said.

The big question, however, is what all these downloads and votes are actually worth. Except for the bragging rights, they seem to hold little predictive value.

Last year, half of the voting visitors of BTarena chose Avatar as their favorite, while the Academy members picked The Hurt Locker. In terms of downloads District 9 was the big winner on BitTorrent in 2010, so Nolan and the Inception crew shouldn’t get too excited.

In terms of Box Office revenue Inception has little to complain about though. With $823,576,195 in worldwide revenues the millions of downloads on BitTorrent didn’t get in the way of a healthy profit.

Inception was over hyped, people say it’s a Mind Fuck movie but the plot is really easy to understand
    I’m disappoint

Inception was awesome for me. And I took the ending just as the director intended at first, but when the discussions propped up, I found it to be quite awesome to get at the nitty gritty itty bitty things that I’m sure alot of people missed that were important about what was truly real and what wasn’t. Awesome plot man…

i was gonna say the same. It was so overly hyped even i believed it was good, until i watched it. And don’t get me wrong, i think leonardo is a good actor, and the idea was great, but it was too cut out for me. Only cool part is when she ‘bends’ the world in the beginning.

If only you could track how many who had downloaded it, watched it AND deleted it within 24 hours after watching..

I am equally dissapointed that the mindfvck ending is of course reduced by the prospect of two sequels. What are they thinking? They’ve ruined the only part of the film that makes wading through all the rest of that dross worth while. Wasted mu time. Yup, over hyped and then ruined by the studios greed to milk the concept. So long as it doesn’t go on like the original ‘Planet of the Apes’ films.

Not only , is the plot easy to understand…
It is a stupid story. Breaking into someones dream , then into a dream within a dream.. ect..
All to steal something or implant an idea… That no one really cares about.

      Hardly a “”mindFuk”" is it…
      NO profound message….
NO profound thoughts felt by the audience.
Even tho.. Fans say it is profound, “”is everything just a dream ?”"
We all know the answer is no..

The premise of the dream world is a good one , especially the idea of being able to alter the construction of it. (the visual effects where impressive for this premise )
But the reason for entering the dream is what ?…. stupid…. yea… stupid.
      – – Oceans 11 in a dream… whooo.. my mind exploded .

The storyline was really…. that stupid… Even the “”dream worlds”" where rip offs of for eg… James Bond movie in the snow..

Visually.. it is stunning in parts… Truly stunning..

It was the best Action Film of 2010.. In my opinion.. without doubt…
Best Visual effects in 2010…. Not an opinion… a Fact

But as I said … after I first saw it in the theatre..
People will rate this movie 10/10 until they realise that it wasn’t as good as so many other films out there , that they have already seen. The visuals carried the whole movie.
The IMDB rating… has dropped steadily since then… and will continue to drop.

I personally rate the film at 6.9/10..
Mainly because the visuals are so good. They carry the whole stupid storyline.
It’s worth seeing if you haven’t already seen it.
Just don’t expect to finish watching the film and then start having profound thoughts.
It’s a mind-boring Action Film with amazing visuals.

Quite enjoyable to watch… … … But nothing to think about.

Can you imagine the trouble that would get stirred up if bittorrent users were allowed to vote in the oscars.

It would be voting for your favorite movie then the MPAA suing you for downloading it. Wouldn’t that really piss you off.

  • Foff

I saw it and did not really care for it. In a world without internet I may have rented at some point or seen it in a dollar theater or never bothered. Point is in a world without internet there probably would have been no or very little sell for me. The point is for me and most of those who did download it all it means is that we saw sooner then we would have if at in all in a world without internet.

I assume this applies for most of us that downloaded it so the real fact is that there is very little if any lost revenue due to downloads. Anyway there really not much acting in most of these shows it is all action and cgi so any actor now can’t take much credit for the success of the movie.

      Matrix… every time…

The premise of the Matrix is profound.. ( our reality is not real )

The premise of Inception COULD HAVE been profound.. but as is… it’s just a Heist movie in someones dream.
They could have made inception a truly profound movie like the matrix , with exactly the same realisation of reality. ( our reality is not real )
But they choose a “Heist” theme….
rather than a “Our reality isn’t real , let’s save it” theme

      • Anon

“Our reality isn’t real , let’s save it”

What always makes me laugh is how there is no such thing as a good movie; from the point of view of the commenters. the people that bitch and moan about hollywood movies makes me wonder, if they say that hollywood only puts out crap, why do they continue to download and/or watch it, plus on that note; what other source of movies are there? sure theres indie and what not, but even then the quality content is far and few between. movies like inception should be recognized as a great movie simply because of the amount of work pre and post production, as well as during. but im done ranting, and for those who will attack me for my point of view…get at me

The idea that everyone in the film business is rich and horrible is a myth. There are a few very rich people – as there probably are in every business – and lots of people on very ordinary wages.

    • Paul

But they have a roof over their heads, food on the table and live more comfortably than half of the world. Or is it they all want the big flash mansions, swimming pools, and heli-pads? Maybe they could ask their employers for a bit more, i mean, after the initial outlay of 200 million dollars to pay for the film inception, there is over 600 million dollars left. So why don’t they ask their greedy employers for a bigger slice of that?

      • https://thepiratebay.org/user/man-o-tor/ manOtor

        It’s just not that simple.
The 600 Million already belong to someone else.
People invest their money in the movies – mostly bad people (and I mean really bad people, mean bastards, mostly organized crime, i think) – and these people want their cut + interests. If suddenly some schmuck from the lower end of the foodchain wants more money, demands couldn’t be met, and heads would role (literally). Fact is, that Hollywood is the biggest money laundring machine in the world. At the top of Hollywood you don’t have decent people. You have the most badass gangsters. That’s how it all started, that’s how it’ll always be: especiall with that insane amounts of money involved.
That’s also the reason for this war on priacy, by the way: only criminals accuse others to be criminals, because people always judge others by their own standards… ;)

I notice that the vast majority of the comments here are critiquing the movie, rather than understanding what the root problem is. I have no great love for movie executives who skim off most of a movie’s profits for themselves. However, as a screenwriter, I understand the importance of keeping the several hundred people involved in any given movie’s production working. Writer’s Guild scale for a production script is only about $80K. Hollywood itself is in it’s death throes and studios are producing cheap crap, for the most part. More movies and television productions are being produced in Vancouver and Toronto than in the United States. The economic impact is enormous. The downloading of copyrighted content hurts everybody, including your own personal economy. I realize that it’s tempting to avoid the $29.95 DVD cost or the $12.95 theatre fee, but when it is no longer profitable for a studio to produce quality programming, you will all be stuck with garbage. Think about this for a while.

  • TammyG

Wow, this place is full of ignorant thieves making excuses for bad behavior. IGNORANT, I say, because worldwide revenues aren’t profits and any argument citing revenues as profit is laughably flawed. Even if it weren’t, theft is still theft, plain and simple. You don’t own it. You didn’t buy it. You don’t have the right to appropriate it without permission. Saying you wouldn’t have bought it anyway is a childish excuse more suited to two-year-olds than persons sufficiently old and adept enough to operate a computer to download movies. Grow up.

  • HCarter

Disgusting article. Do you have any idea how many hard-working and talented people depend on a healthy film industry to support their families?

  • Annon

Here’s what I don’t get, torrenting is still theft even if the movie’s worldwide revenues are in the hundreds of millions. You guys talk about the producers being parasites, but what about the hundreds of people hired to work on scenery, lighting, make-up, or even just keeping the set clean? Are they parasites too? What makes it your right to take the movie without paying? Answer me that. Why are you allowed to enjoy someone else’s hard work for free? I’m not going to quote figures here, but you guys are idiots. If there isn’t sufficient profit for the companies’ tastes, then there won’t be as much effort put into movies or their scripts.

    • Randomwords

logic is kinda flawed here…if, and this is a big if, nobody downloaded any movies whatsoever, do you really think the poor suckers at the end of the food chain would see more of the profits? Seems a bit ridiculous…imagine i was the producer or some other powerful person behind the movie…for one, if your the cleaning guy i certainly wouldn’t know about you and moreover, it is me who’s gonna make more money, not the people who are hired to work on “lightning”, as you put it so nicely.

The problem is that this is not all about money, it is about power. The two are certainly not separable here but money is not what’s targeted in the first place – at least not by the rich and “powerful”. Think, the rich…why would they want to have more money? Studies have shown that for those kind of people the thought of getting/having/seeing money stimulates the same regions in the brain as cocaine, for instance. But screw the studies and let’s get back to this simple question: Why would rich people still want to make more money – (psycho)logically speaking?

As for the whole “we have families and need mouths to feed”-argument…grow a pair, will ya? Nobody forced you into procreating in the first place. You wanted a family, then you gotta live with all the consequences that come with those responsibilities you’ve inflicted upon yourself. The whole “i have a family” line is so extremely boring and only there to appeal to people through some form of rhetoric…yes, i’m sure you’ve heard of Aristotle and his logos-pathos-ethos categorization when it comes to rhetoric. The problem with most people is they use the whole pathos dimension in order to make other people feel for their situation, well what about ours? But your right, i’m the most important person and if i’m not, then i will make sure to ensure to you will think that “others” are more important than you, you see where this is going, right? ;) – well, there is nothing noble about that, all part of your attempt to convince people…for whatever reason, that’s surely an individual and personal matter, isn’t it?

You’ve got several options tho…look for another job if you think you get exploited or robbed…people do that…they change jobs every now and then…but it’s your passion, you say? Well thanks to your family you gotta compromise…Either you keep feeding their mouths or you work on a job that you love…

I think piracy isn’t so much a problem for the people who actually work on the movies or even music for that matter…the ones that are really screwed are the middle men…but the middle men are usually also the ones who know how to manipulate others – through language, simple rhetorics – i’m sure you’re good friends with at least one of those ;) Middle men are becoming obsolete, maybe not during our lifetime, but they will…it’s all a question of time
