Game of Thrones Crowned Most Pirated TV-Show of the Season

With nearly 4 million downloads per episode, the HBO hit series Game of Thrones is the most pirated TV-show of the season. Worldwide hype combined with restricted availability are the key ingredients for the staggering number of unauthorized downloads. How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory complete the top three, albeit with significantly fewer downloads than the chart topper.

gotAs predicted, Game of Thrones has the honor of becoming the most downloaded TV-show of the spring season.

While there are many reasons for people to download TV-shows through BitTorrent, airing delays and HBO’s choice not to make it widely available online are two of the top reasons.

Game of Thrones is particularly popular in Australia, where people have to wait a week after the U.S. release comes out. Nevertheless, even in the U.S. hundreds and thousands are downloading the show for free, although many would love to pay for it if HBO offered a standalone HBO GO subscription.

It’s clear that HBO (and others) prefer exclusiveness over piracy, which is a dangerous game. They might make decent money in the long run by selling subscriptions. However, this limited availability also breeds pirates, and one has to wonder how easy it is to convert these people to subscriptions once they have experienced BitTorrent.

For now, Game of Thrones appears to be the top contender to throw Dexter off the throne by the end of the year, to become the most pirated TV-show of 2012.

Below we have compiled a list of the most downloaded TV-shows worldwide (estimates per single episode) for the spring season up until June 1st 2012, together with the viewer average for TV in the US. The data for the top 10 is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.

I wonder if the TV studios analyze that information…
How does big bang have so many viewers and yet less downloads than the other 2?

Is it that US citizens like big bang and not game of thrones? And game of thrones is mainly downloaded in other countries?

Another interesting fact is that supernatural and game of thrones downloads are almost as much as the actual TV viewers.
Then again those tv viewer counts are only for the US, so you can’t know much from that.
Aren’t there statistics about US downloads instead of worldwide?

    • Anyone

you get Big Bang Theory for free but you’d have to pay to get Game of Thrones
that is the difference in viewers vs. downloaders for those shows

a more interesting comparison is Big Bang Theory vs. How I Met Your Mother
one would think the target audience of BBT downloads more, but the statistics contradict that.

      • Clintmemo

I think that’s pretty easy to explain with the geek factor. Geeks are more likely to watch BBT and also more likely to know how to pirate shows.  It’s the perfect overlap.

        • Anyone

but why does BBT then have a “better” views:downloads ratio than HIMYM?

Big Bang is on Basic Cable, maybe even OTA but idk.

I watch it all the time, ON MY TV, well HTPC, so its recorded and I can watch it whenever I damn well please.

    • http://identi.ca/LauRoman Lauren?iu Roman

Game of Thrones requires HBO which in most cases requires a higher tier subscription with crap like sport channels that you may not want and it costs a shitload. Most other shows on that list are on networks part of the basic package , or in some cases can even be viewed free OTA.

America gets screwed well and good, even tho HBO is an American company. Over here i can add for between $2.25 – $5.70 the HBO pack (depends if i want it HD also and if i want Cinemax) to any subscription plan but the cheapest one (which is analogue). The downside is that HBO over here doesn’t get all the shows from the US right away and not all the fights. Thankfully GoT airs the next monday evening.

      • http://profiles.google.com/orfetheo Orfeas Theofanis

The TV system in the US seems too complicated…
Over here we have all the free channels (which are still analogue and became digital 2 years ago), plus NOVA which offers 4 movie channels, plenty of sports channels and animal planet and other documentary channels, plus cartoons etc.

We basically have free TV and/or NOVA.

There are some new subscriptions services like Nova but they only have crap, so that’s our only actual choice.

      Here’s a guess:

      There are mainly two groups.

Group A likes big bang theory and game of thrones, they are fine with watching shows they like on TV.

Group B does not like big bang theory, they like game of thrones and they prefer downloading their shows and watching them from the pc later.

excuse me for being pessimistic, but, why analyse?  Why apply logical sense here.  You will only go so far until you hit a ceiling of rock that stops your efforts of truth.  All your good work will be stopped at the point you get to when it begins to show the world that the middlemen ultimately want to retain power.  Power.  Control information and entertainment and you control the people.  I often wonder that, if I am right about this, how far are these middlemen willing to go in order to retain this pot of gold?  How far are they willing to go to retain (and strengthen) Copyright?

gives the stupid sods at HBO an excuse to moan about ‘increasing piracy’. what is even more stupid is that it wouldn’t have gained this title had it not have been for the attitude of HBO themselves. makes me wonder whether it was done intentionally any way. i find it rather strange when the answer to the problem is so obvious but wont be undertaken. now, who does that remind me of?

HBO has never had any kind of anti-piracy stance, though. At least in recent times.

Think is usa tv produders only think it that as ONLY usa ppl are counted. Since they wanna sell tv show other countries later on and make money on that too.

When they dedicate whether not to AXE that or that tv series down. Only usa viewer count. Why? because series is not sold yet other countries and if they have 2 low view tv they mighty axe one them to make room for another new or both them.

I would make(or want) global ad support tv site in internet where you could pay them money then you see them 1hour after show it aired usa or watch ad supported version. This should be worldwide and no regional restrictions (if you add them then you have same service as hulu). This would solve pirace problem homever there would still millions others(pirates) that dont accept *legal* way. they would continue pirate it but number this would significally smaller and this kind services will reduce pirace, if you just block access, sue fans etc. all those would just add wood fire of pirace and it grows bigger and bigger…

OMG! When you count Usenet, Private bittorrent, IRC (XDCC) and cyberlocker users added to what is already counted many of these shows have more downloaders than viewers who watch them traditionally (with commercials).

Of course, I wonder how many viewers were counted from places like Netflix and other such places. I really find the Neilsen Rating system unbelievable.

    • Glib

Those viewer numbers are generally not as accurate as the torrent numbers.  The torrent numbers are from people actually connecting and reporting their status, the TV shows are from surverys, and they can be quite biased, since those numbers tell advertisers how popular a show is and help the networks determine pricing for the commercials / how much a show is worth to syndicate.

I am quite surprised Hawaii Five-0 isn’t on there.

Imagine if they charged one dollar to download each week’s episode 10 minutes after it had aired. Even if less than 50% of those who pirated GoT adopted this method of viewing the show HBO would make a lot more money on the series.

    • Guest

Yeah, the internet isn’t only piracy.
It also makes it easy to reach the entire world instantly and for free with anything.
The old issues of physical media are a thing of the past, they could sell things for only a fraction of what the physical media version had to sell in the past to make a profit and the worldwide profits would still multiply because the gain per sale would be huge and the potential customer base is the entire world.
Information even spreads by itself because people talk about what they like so even marketing is easier.

If you want a good example look at steam.
A console game costs 50$ on a physical retailer and Steam can sell a PC game for 5$ worldwide and they still make better profits despite the easier piracy on PC and the smaller market vs consoles and they never have to bother paying for adds.

    • mwhahaha

I’d be up for that. Don’t want a Sky package for one single show, rather than waiting for the boxset I’d like to be able to get it asap. Heck I’d even pay a dollar PLUS a nickel.

  • George Ohler

The idea of HBOGO as a standalone service has been addressed by HBO themselves, and while myself would love to see it as a standalone service, I can see where HBO is coming from as to why they won’t…  It’s just not good business for them right now.

HBO is a content creator, not a content distributor.  They don’t distribute their content (aside from HBOGO, which wasn’t intended as a primary method of distribution, but more a perk for subscribers).  Cable, Satellite, and other companies are the method of distribution.  These companies do everything from billing to customer support; HBO doesn’t have to do any of that, their affiliates take care of it all for them.  The increase in overhead required by taking on a standalone service, on top of the strain of the relationship with current affiliates doesn’t justify creating HBOGO as a standalone service.  Doing so would change the entire nature of their company.  Not to mention even with the piracy (granted they’ll moan about it) they’re still rolling in the dough.

HBO makes content, they don’t distribute it is basically what it boils down to.

Now convince the distributors to provide standalone services, and you may have something going for you… Or find a way to actually make it profitable for HBO and other content creators.  If I could just pay my cable company for my HBO service and not all the other basic cable channels I never watch, then we’d be getting somewhere.

    • Stinky

This makes sense. If HBO were to offer their content by going around the  distributors who keep them in business… I don’t think it would go very well.

      • Glib

… unless they only offered the service to people who have no access to HBO in the first place.  There are countries that have no HBO.

      • Anonymous

If everyone went around the distributors it would go well.  Music, books, Movies…

  • Population Figures

People forget that some of the so called pirates, are simply people that have cable subscriptions and are using the downloads as a form of VCR/ PVR recorder because they cannot watch the program when it suits them and without adverts.

Obviously in many cases it is more likely to be about lack of access in itself, which the studios have nothing but themselves to blame for.

But, lets look at the global market for something like game of thrones in the main English speaking countries, with developed higher speed internet access:

    USA ~311M (~4.2M viewers)
UK ~62M (many alternate options of VOD)
    Canada 34M
Australia ~22M (~3M downloads from 6.4M household connections for the first s02 episode)
NZ ~ 4M (popular downloading country)
Singapore ~5M (Doubtful too many watch it in Singapore)

    Sub Total ~438M

so GoT has an official market population share of ~1.5% in the US, with a further ~1% (Main English speaking countries) watching it via public torrents globally if 1 download = 1 person watching.

Sure we all know there are possibly multiple people watching, as well as using cyberlockers, private trackers, sharing drives/discs with friends, which would drive up the overall market share.

But if you factor in Europe:

Europe ~738M (~676M excl UK), so probably much <1% watch in english with a potential audience of ~1-2M potentially, although I would suspect more.

By the sounds of these numbers piracy is pretty minimal at ~2% of the potential main english speaking population, whish is strange when overall general surveys of people that download consistently fit the ~10-30% mark.

    • Anyone

      tastes differ

not everyone that downloads will download game of thrones

      • Population Figures

I was using GoT as the example as it was the top downloaded program according to the article.

Of course tastes differ, but the population example stands.

    • mwhahaha

In these times of fear maybe one person downloads and shares it manually to friends. Also you assume each person who downloads a show is a sad individual who watches it alone. If on average you say 3 people see each download then your numbers triple.

Also it’s fantasy drama and the market’s ok but not huge for that.

      • Population Figures

Wow, you also slightly missed the point.

        I do believe I mentioned that…

“Sure we all know there are possibly multiple people watching, as well as
using cyberlockers, private trackers, sharing drives/discs with
friends, which would drive up the overall market share.”

My point I was trying to get across, is the overall number of “public” downloads from the top most “pirated” show, is officially a mere drop in the bucket in comparison to the potential target population. In fact it even shows GoT is not overly popular in the US of A officially when compared to others in the list above (BBT, HIMYM).

If we take this one step further for the people that propose HBO opens up to global downloads for a fee. They currently have circa 30 million US customers averaging $7 a month revenue from the ~$15 for HBO, generating ~$210M USD (From various numbers raised recently, which I do not know if they are accurate).

A subscription based service would likely last 3 months for the 10 episodes, so at the same price that would generate $7 x 3 x 4.2M = $88.2M, but would people want to pay the same cable share price of ~$21 to watch the season digitally? I doubt it, as it starts working out more expensive than to have the full cable package with all the extra content. If a hard copy Bluray, or DVD was included, to be shipped once the season finished, then it might swing a few more buyers.

Even though the above equation would work out at close to $2 per episode, I wonder how many would be convinced to buy it from HBO/ iTunes/ Amazon if it was sold as a monthly, or season package.

It also makes further seasons likely dependent upon non US sales to tip it up to the >$100M mark based upon recent claims of the cost per season. Maybe it might be enough to convince a further 1M “pirates” to purchase it, which would tip it over the $100M mark, but at the same time HBO would be losing money from having to sell the show at a lower price to other broadcasters due to non exclusivity of rites.

In my mind, there are fewer people that would convert all of their TV viewing habits to a paid per episode at say $2, direct download on demand and no longer “pirate”, for the simple reason it might work out more expensive than current broadcast options, which are subsidised by advertising depending upon your viewing habits. The higher the price per episode, then the lower the take up I imagine, but without a high enough price the studios will struggle with funding under existing scenarios.

Sure not all productions cost as much, or probably even half as much as GoT, but once again the example I am using in this exercise is GoT. In fact for cheaper programs, with higher viewing audiences, then a VOD TV episode could be down as low as $0.5 and still turn a decent profit for the studio.

So what would need to change to make a VOD system more viable? The only option I can plainly see, is that costs of production have to come down. Can anybody for the life of me explain why an actor playing a physical role, or cartoon voice over, should be paid 6-7 figures per episode, aside from the fact that they are popular shows and the studios can charge more for them when they sell them overseas. VOD TV would turn that upside down, as the money would no longer be there in the same quantities and the studios and production houses that evolve and drop costs the most would prosper (drop large licensing fees)

Hollywood used to have actors on salary locked in to the studio. There is zero reason why actors couldn’t be under a similar longer term more flexible system, that was a lot cheaper and gave the actors more job security.

And on that note, I have become bored. So before I get called a shrill, or Troll, I pay for cable, but use downloads as my PVR and I see zero problem with doing so. Ironically enough I was also talking to a TV media sales person (He sells MGM, History, Discovery etc) within the News Corp group 3 days ago and he does exactly the same thing for exactly the same reasons and he sells the TV shows!

I’m thinking there are too many distributes that would scream bloody murder if HBO cut them out of the loop. Go with a faulty business model or get sued? I wonder if that’s the question they’re asking themselves.

I have been known to download GoT.. and the reason is this, My carrier (DirecTV) Even though I have forked over around $100/mo for a premium HD subscription will invade up to 30% of the screen with advertisements in the middle of a f*ng show.

I can understand running commercials between, especially in a free-view environment (ala old air-broadcast tv, cable etc). but I’m paying exclusively for my content now.. Theres no need to let me know about whats happening on SyFy during the middle of a show on HBO… Thats just BS.
Dexter, Rome, Spartacus, friggin Mythbusters, its all the same. kiss one third of your screen byebye to horrible contrasted banners and advertisements.
And so i cancelled HBO, Skinemax, Showtime, Cancelled my Netflix (Since they stopped airing first-run TV shows), and still hiked up their rates.

Gave up on all those profiteering gluttons, and I Pulled this down, so break out the handcuffs already I’m a baaaad man.. but so is everyone else apparently.

    • mwhahaha

When people can download without ads or record with a device that filters out the ads, and the ads go towards paying for the show to be made… what else do you expect other than ads to be all over it. They can’t product place with this show.

A micropayment world wide online service is the only way quality TV can survive.

I have not downloaded seas0on 2 YET (waiting for the entire thing so I can watch it straight through on a long weekend) BUT its HBOs own damn fault for not allowing folks to JUST SUBSCRIBE to HBO.

-The only 2 channels on Cable I would watch/pay for is HBO and A&E  and IF I could just get these 2 stations I wouldnt have to “steal” (ha ha) Game of Thrones and Walking Dead… Instead the Cable companies are “stealing” from me by making me buy a package and support shit I do not watch like MTV, Nickelodian and such.

Once I can buy my package piecemeal I will not “pirate” these shows… Until then – VPN FTW.

    • Anyone

as of last sunday the season is done

      • DarKPenguiN

        Cool, thanks.

Really though- Why can I not pay for JUST HBO (or channels I want) via the internet. The tech is there, there is no “installation” or infrastructure to set up other than offering piecemeal cable via the internet.

For  me (and others like me) I have free local HD stations for the news and a few shows I watch- Other than that I am online and not about to pay an extra $50/month to get HBO/A&E for the TWO SHOWS I WATCH.

Give us some FAIR options. In the Internet age many of us dont even own TVs anymore.

I’d say piracy has a place but it would be smaller if the official option wasn’t so far behind.
All my friends saw it on HBO, and I began watching it on HBO too but once I really got into it switched to the superior pirated version whole my friends kept watching it on HBO.

I would pay to download Game of Thrones. Where can I pay is the question. NOWHERE unless you want to pay for a stinking HBO and cable. No thank you! That put the ball back in their court. IT IS THEIR FAULT FOR NOT ADAPTING TO THIS NEW DIGITAL WORLD! It is not your fault. Download away with a smile!

Stop freeloading and just pay for HBO if you want to watch the series.  It costs to make these shows.

I still think this number is a bit low. I imagine if you combined the number of downloads through usenet/one-click hosting as well as torrents it would be far too high for the studios to ignore
