Pirate Party Launches ‘Facebook’ For Movies

In what will be seen as an escalation of their ‘Linking is Not a Crime’ campaign, the Czech arm of the Pirate Party is backing another file-sharing related startup. The project, described as a ‘Facebook’ for movies, is the fourth sharing site launched by Pirates in less than two months. Along with the launch comes an open invitation, should it ever be needed, for The Pirate Bay to take refuge in the country.

In support of their ‘Linking is Not a Crime’ campaign, in late July the Czech Pirate Party launched not one but two movie download portals. The sites, which offer links but don’t host any infringing material themselves, were launched to protest the plight of a high school student facing a 5 million euro damages claim for linking to copyright works.

The 16-year-old from Liberec was accused by the Czech Anti-Piracy Union of publishing links to copyright infringing material on his website, acts which the Union claim have caused damages of more than 5 million euros.

Now, in another “don’t pick on the kid, pick on us” move, the Pirate Party have thrown down the gaunlet yet again to the Anti-Piracy Union by partnering and launching another download site.

The social network, called Moviehome, is being described by the Party as a ‘Facebook for movies’. Users of the site are encouraged to upload links to reviews, subtitles and of course, movie downloads.

“Sharing of links is a principle without which the Internet would cease to function,” says Pirate Party chairman Ivan Bartoš. “Therefore we’re systematically fighting against the criminalization of linking.”

In common with Piratskefilmy and Tipnafilm, the two file-sharing projects proceeding it, Moviehome has been created by programmers who are too afraid to reveal their identities in case they are hounded by the Anti-Piracy Union. The Pirate Party have no such fears, and say they have are yet to receive any complaints.

“The Czech anti-piracy union does not know what to do,” Party Vice-President Mikuláš Ferjencik told TorrentFreak.

“They’re probably focusing on the court action with the Liberec student, with the hope that they might claim eventually that all our websites are illegal. They also do not want to give us publicity and they do not have much to say about it really as our sites actually are legal.”

Moviehome

Ferjencik says that the Pirate Party will run Moviehome.cz for as long as it remains a non-commercial concern. He says that the Party wants to separate business and politics, so if the site’s creators want to turn Moviehome.cz into a business venture, they’ll simply hand the site back and wish them luck.

“As a party, we do not want to depend on the finances from web advertising that’s why all of our linking sites are strictly non-commercial. On the other hand, I must emphasize that there’s nothing wrong about running commercial linking websites, after all Google and Seznam.cz have been doing this for a long time,” adds Ferjencik.

The launch of the third site in a little over a month does not mark the end of Czech Pirate support for further file-sharing ventures, or perhaps even more spectacular adventures.

“We will back anyone with a similar project who asks for our support,” Ferjencik explains, while extending an open invitation to The Pirate Bay to take up Czech hosting should they encounter further legal difficulties.

“We’ll also consider suing ourselves to get it to court before the Liberec case is over, but my flatmates are not in a mood for a police visit yet, so it will have to wait for a while,” Ferjencik adds.

While the Czech Pirates now have three file-sharing sites in their portfolio, adding Pirate Party Canada’s Travis McCrea’s site, Tormovies.org, means that a total of four Pirate-inspired movie download sites have been created in less than two months.

“We cannot lose this war,” says Ferjencik.

“In the unlikely case that the court ‘says linking is a crime’, the public uproar will get us into parliament. People hate it when they lose rights they already had, especially when they fought hard to obtain them.

“People did not carry out the revolution in 1989 to see students paying millions of Euros for helping others to share information.”

A facebook for movies? Uhm. when I pirate I prefer to stay as anonymous as possible, why would anyone want to combine piracy with social networking :/

Fake-named social networking. But yeah, I prefer torrentz.

,. awessommee,, I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.

I think the idea is kind of like a petition, or a protest. You’re basically signing your name & showing that you pirate stuff. They’re wanting to see if the government is really okay with punishing over 30% of it’s population for something almost everyone does. It’s an experiment in practicality of law, and a damn good one. Of course, reporting it on an English speaking website like torrentfreak will increase the amount of registered users that the Czech government has no jurisdiction over, thus creating more screening work for lawsuits & showing how incredibly inefficient they are…

Very smart! ?´?`?.?oO( Good idea! )

Why don’t call it “G+ for movies”?

  • grinch

what’s the difference between linking to a movie and the links that are in a banner?

    • djnforce9

Technically they are the same but the banner is bound to draw more attention due to it appearing on each page and utilizing some kind of flashy image.

    • Anonymous

The difference is that noobs and judges seem to think that embedded links are hosted by the site itself…

  • politux

Good for the Czech Pirate Party, they are doing something positive to further the cause. The copyright monopolists like to go after children, grandmothers and the blind but the Party is saying pick on someone your own size! :)

  • Anonymous

The MAFIAA only takes you on if they think you’re weak. They’re not interested in fair or just fights. They target the kids, grandmothers, 2nd string ISPs and pliable (and corrupt) governments, not legally-schooled file-sharing firebrands spoiling for a fight.

You’d be much better off disguising yourself as a group of weak, clueless kids who just found out Utorrent exists. Set some clever honeypot designed to lead Dtecnet up a garden path, round six merry-go-rounds and home again to a royal legal cluster-fuck that empties their clients’ pockets and highlights what royal tards the copyright monopoly are.

Or maybe that’s what we’re already doing. It’s enough to give a caveman headaches.

To those complaining that they can’t read the page I suggest using Chrome. It comes with a built in translator for web pages and it worked for me on moviehome.cz. It’s not perfect but it is far better than nothing.

  • Lordcanyon

sure Linking is Not a Crime.

their trying to say linking to copyrighted materials is not a crime, but it is.

its like saying i planned the bank robbery but i didn’t rob the bank.

they just want a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

personaly i don’t care i’m going to download and link to movies/music/games for the rest of my life anyway

    .

    • Jaz

Robbing a bank is STEALING, downloading copyrighted content is COPYING. If I copy someones bike, does that mean they no longer than a bike? – See the difference? Linking / Piracy should not and should never be classed as a crime.

      • Mike

yeah genius, but if you copy, you steal the author its living.

        • MikeSucks

No you don’t. That is incorrect. The author still makes a living. All people regardless of where they work or what they do, get paid for their work. You write a book, you get an advance or a regular check. Ditto a song. Ditto a movie. Ditto a game. Etc. Then they do more work, they get another check.

Stop spreading false information. It only makes the world that much more ignorant and misinformed.

        • Jaz

I like how Mike liked his own post.

        • Scary Devil Monastery

By that argument any time i have an idea and speak it aloud i should be able to claim revenue from people using the idea for private purposes.

Good luck on that, Mike. Copying isn’t theft, and you cannot “steal” what never existed in the first place – i.e. an imaginary sale which “might” have been if a copy hadn’t been made somewhere.

According to you, pirating should have made Paulo Coelho a beggar. Oddly enough after his work got put on TPB his actual sales skyrocketed by millions.

You calling copying theft is wrong. You claiming that piracy takes the revenue from artists is equally so. And finally, you making such false claims still won’t overturn the dozen studies which governments and ngo’s have made regarding the effects of noncommercial filesharing which emphatically come to the conclusion that the “lost sale” doesn’t exist.

      • http://twitter.com/guolaosi spaceman elder

This is going to be especially important in the future when we have technology that can manifest copies of objects… We’re well on the way.

        • http://torrentfreak.com/ Rob8urcakes

Yup, Gene Roddenberry (or whoever invented the replicator/transporter idea) is one of my “Gods” too.

Much in the same way as Hollywood used to be when I grew up actually – but I guess we need to move on when our Gods turn so vicious, impotent and openly selfish.

  • http://Twitter.com/elisaknockout Elisa ? Knockout™

lol I think if it had English translation it’d be cool but i didn’t see any.

    • Tom (PP-CZ)

We would very much like to translate everything we release to english but unfortunately time is of short supply in a neverending campaign against copywrong industry’s lobby. Hopefully there will come a time when we’ll have the manpower to translate more. In the meantime you can try using google translate: http://goo.gl/iFy1S The translation is pretty good BTW :)

      • Jaz

No, cz google translator messes around with the javascript, making it not work… perfectly.

  • townie2

    go Pirate Party!

  • http://www.twitter.com/Spartz Bas Grasmayer

When will we get a Pirate Bay of social networking…

  • Mike

link is not crime, ok. So, why don’t you guys link to sites with illegal activities, as how to perform crimes, how to kill someone, child pornography and other stuff? You guys have to assume you want to steal stuff, so you are criminals and cheap ones, as you steal small quantities as the price of a book, movie or software.

    • MikeSucks

Downloading a file is not theft. It’s considered copyright infringement. So first off, get that part right. Stop saying “steal”. Secondly, if you search around online, there are plenty of sites with info on crimes. Not necessarily step by step this is how you commit a crime, but rather obvious stuff that you can easily write your own step by step. Nothing illegal in that. How to kill someone. Ha. There’s sites on how to do exactly that, some would fall under the “suicide” thing though, but it’s the same thing. Child porn is illegal, in pretty much every country on the planet. So yeah, bad example to give. You’re trying to associate child porn with file sharing, real grown up of you. /s That’s exactly what the various industries are doing, playing on emotions, a rather pathetic move.

And this is a new site. Why would they link to stuff? They sorta do already anyway, they put up news about various sites and programs and whatnot. And unless you’re an idiot, you can pretty much take it from there and go visit those sites on your own. You don’t need a direct link if you can read.

Sigh. Your words are silly and rather idiotic. May I suggest if you’re going to repeat that kind of thing you just copy/paste Jack’s comments. Saves you time and sounds a bit better (barely) than what you wrote.

      • Laticia

sorry child porn is legal in most countries. Google it yourself, don’t spread lies. They want to censor child porn and legal models and often do so the fight against censorship is a crusade we have to win. Same as the article states, share your links. Fuk the ppl who say “you can’t share this, that, not authorized, etc”. suck a dick to them and i hope they get ass raped

        • LaticiaSucks

          You total jackass

        • LaticiaSucks

          You total jackass

        • 7th_Guest

CP legal in most countries? Right, hf acting on that notion. In an unrelated note, I’d start being very suspicious of vans parked around if I were you right about now.

    • Scary Devil Monastery

Ah, you mean like elementary knowledge in chemistry enables you to build a bomb big enough to tear the facade of the FBI Oklahoma headquarters?

According to all criteria, the chemistry book describing the reaction and materials is a link.

Moreover, according to your argument, anyone who ever wrote a crime/spy novel – From Ian Fleming to Stephen King – is a criminal because they describe in detail how to commit crimes?

Similarly every investigating journalist, using your criteria and arguments, is guilty of enabling crimes by doing his job of reporting the details.

Will you – please – dial down the stupid a few exponential notches?
