Slacker Uprising’s Torrent Available Worldwide, by Accident
Written by Ben Jones on September 24, 2008Michael Moore’s new film about the run up to the 2004 US election was released online today, only for US and Canada residents. In order to maximize capacity, they’ve even embraced BitTorrent, and the official download is using the Pirate Bay tracker. To the dismay of their lawyers, however, this also lifts the geographical restrictions.
The film, intended by Moore “to bring out millions of young and new voters on November 4th.”, covers his tour just prior to the 2004 US Presidential election, rallying to protest against President Bush. It covers a 42 day tour, over 60+ cities, and the obstacles put in place by Republicans.
To some this might not seem like a worthy event for TorrentFreak to cover, after all, films come out every week. However, this film markets itself as “…the first time ever that a major feature-length film is debuting as a free download on the Internet – legally.” - a title that could arguably fall to Steal This Film. Yet, its the interaction between the legal and technical aspects that are the biggest story here.
First and foremost, the film’s website states that downloads are available in the US and Canada only. It states this not just once, but twice AND uses an IP lookup system to check. If you fail the IP check, you are told that the lawyers have said the film can only be offered to people in those countries.
It’s such a ’shame’ then, that they have used BitTorrent. Worse, they’ve used a set of public trackers (including The Pirate Bay), and allowed the use of both Peer Exchange and DHT. Clearly, all it needs is for someone to offer the .torrent to other people, and they can download the film, as the torrent protocol has no methods for limiting by geographical location. Indeed, as you can see on this screenshot, there are plenty of people on the torrent from outside North America.
Is this deliberate, or accidental? Moore is known for his disregard of rules (and laws) in making films (such as his Cuba trip for Sicko), and this could be the latest example. Alternatively, it could be a lack of understanding on the part of those that are providing the technical backend.
However, with a budget of $2 million for distribution, Brave New Films could have done better, and have set up their own tracker, enforcing a US and Canada only download. Not that this would have helped much. It’s the Internet, and once it’s downloaded, it can be retorrented. In that they might be foresighted enough to try and keep the downloads together, strengthening the swarm.

What’s the point of limiting the torrent to US and Canada only? I don’t understand it. The only thing that comes to mind is the fact that these distribution and film companies are control freaks. Kind of lame since a director usually wants as many people as possible to see their films, with an added emphasis on the free movies especially.

Geographic restrictions: another reason why P2P is a good thing, and why the copyright regime is bad. P2P allows access for everyone, and disallows controlling availability. People need to have things freely available, not restricted to certain areas, etc.

Actually, I just used Hotspot Shield to attain a US IP-Address (same method to watch Hulu outside the US) and then find the torrent link. After that, you can shut off Hotspot Shield and it will download fine.

I recall another movie being released as free, over torrent (and other means) It’s called Star Wreck, great film, better than anything that MM has ever or ever will come out with.
Anyone who knows what a proxy is can easily just walk around the whole site.
Even if you don’t…. type in proxy into google and then the url of moore’s site into the proxy website’s search bar and it’ll let you navigate the page, masking where you’re from.
I think Moore knows how to play on people’s feelings pretty well. whether or not it has any real effect is debatable but I don’t see much ill intention in his documentaries. I’m happy to be corrected if anyone does think the man has any other goal than self-reputation and the aims of his documentaries though.
As someone who has worked with Moore’s legal counsel, I can tell you he really doesn’t give a fuck what lawyers tell him, he’s going to do what he wants regardless.

I’m going to check out this movie. I liked Sicko. Sure, it’s probably another “Let’s pretend Democrats are different than Republicans, let’s pretend they didn’t vote to occupy Iraq and let’s pretend they aren’t still voting to continue the occupation” thing, but oh well. He’s a good filmmaker.

Unfortunately the movie was clearly aimed and high schhol and college kids with no attention span but a heavy lust for rebellion.
There are much better film makers out there that present more facts and go deeper behind the truths then moore does but they are not as funny (but neither is the subject).
Try loose chain final cut, zeitgeist or anything by David Icke (except that lizard crap)…then you will see the bigger picture that moore is failing to uncover.
