BitTorrent Domain Exodus Continues As Torrentz Dumps .COM

The Internet’s second biggest BitTorrent site is dumping its .COM domain. In an apparent response to the US Government’s Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement recent seizures of domain names, the site moved to a new home. Despite being only a meta-search engine, Torrentz.com appears to be taking no chances with an immediate .EU domain migration.

torrentz.euThe fallout from last month’s domain name seizures carried out by US authorities continues to spread in the file-sharing community.

Torrent-Finder, which shifted to a .INFO domain to continue its operations, is fighting back with legal representation. Others, unsettled by the developing atmosphere of uncertainty, are taking steps to mitigate any potential future action against their sites.

Already several private trackers have invested in alternative domain names which are at least currently believed to be outside US control or influence. Early December the popular Demonoid tracker showed its hand with a shift from a .COM to a .ME domain.

While seizing the domain names of a fully fledged torrent site with index, categorization, heavy moderation, tracker and seedboxes might not be a huge surprise in the current climate, the targeting of the Torrent-Finder meta-search engine came as a real shock to the file-sharing community.

So there can be little doubt that Torrentz, the Internet’s second biggest torrent site, eyed the recent developments with an element of disbelief. As a meta-search engine it should be absolutely fine but the unofficially established rules of the game appear to have changed, despite being based on a case filled with serious mistakes.

To that end, today we can confirm that Torrentz has officially dumped its .COM domain in favor of Torrentz.eu. There’s no official announcement from the site but anyone visiting the old URL is immediately redirected. This change is a permanent one, we have learned.

Two years ago Torrentz already faced a hostile domain takeover from a hacker, but this issue was resolved quickly and without any serious consequences. We assume that moving away from the .COM domain is deemed to be the path of least resistance by the Torrentz.eu team.

But its not just BitTorrent sites that are affected by this environment of uncertainty. With the seizing of the domains of several hip-hop sites – RapGodFathers.com, RMX4U.com, Dajaz1.com, and OnSmash.com – that community is also worried for its future.

A handful of bewildered site owners have contacted TorrentFreak during the last month with questions ranging from “Why were these sites taken down?” through to “What can we do to avoid the same fate?” Our answer to these sites has been consistent – they have been targeted for being involved in RIAA-label music.

For those in hip-hop, the chance to really take their music back to the streets should be a breath of fresh air and a poke in the eye for the corporates who have tried, once they realized it was a money spinner, to absorb their scene during the last 20 years.

For everyone else, other tactics will have to be employed. The technology war to stay online – and findable with a search engine – has only just begun.

It was bound to happen once the US proved that they couldn’t handle DNS in an impartial way.

And what about open trackers? are they gonna change domains, or some might already have? and i would love to see a good list on TF of open trackers, the ones u can add to torrents without the need of submitting them to a site, like publicbt and openbittorrent. would be great ;)

  • p2pfreakkk

Being a regular user of torrentz.com ( I use to .eu domain too as both the domains have been functional for the site for a long time now ..), I would have been mighty disappointed if RIAA and similar outfits would have taken down the website with ‘illegal’ tactics.

It’s important today that websites have Plan-C in place too..what if tomorrow EU joins USA to please the record labels and similar actions are taken out in EU nations ? With the current trend I won’t be surprised. USA has only started the process..I am sure outfits like BREIN and the likes will also lobby with Govt to implement the same in European countries. Scary but it’s coming…just a matter of days or months !!

Here’s wishing the torrent websites ( does not matter if they are indexers or running trackers ) have back-up plans and gets well equipped.

  • Daks

I never was a big fan of Torrentz, but none the less I hope they stay up for a long time just so others can enjoy their services.

This whole masquerade of the all-powerful US domain takeover should be seen as unlawful and a disgusting breech of international business and moral ethics.

@11 do you know that IP stand for “Internet Protocol”. If it’s not IP, then it’s not Internet…

The .p2p and other open tld will surely know a BIG success in the following years.

Then they will cry no one pays the elder tld anymore. And try to censor these too.

    Corporations wants to control internet.

Any torrent sites running on Osiris yet?

  • Anonymous

in fact as any business you shuld migrate away form .com or .net both being more controllable by the usa.

LET the net go dark for them and censor there people.
LET there people fall into the dark ages in time. A nation with such advanced weapons with such a low reading and math level will in time level out as the rest of us leave the planet , and the americans wonder where everyone went as the sun becomes a red giant and takes care for it for good.

NOW thats called a run on sentence folks …..( don’t worry only the American lawyers know it….

Why isn’t craigslist taken down? There is almost certainly illegal content every second posted there, stolen materials, illegal prostitution. Why stop at copyright infringment? Take down Microsoft, for recall that XP had used pirated software to create several wav files.

Seems hypocritical to stop at copyright infringement, there are far worse crimes and these American .com sites need to go down.

TF aren’t you afraid of a domain seizure like torrent-finder? Time to make an alternative route?

Also, we can always use the direct ip. Problem is that if it changes then we have a problem =(

I’m anxiously waiting for .p2p. It’s gonna be a major kick in the US (and MAFIAA) balls.

  • ArmoRus

What’s the point of this site anyway? I never really used it, only followed links to searches which never really lead anything good

  • Lee

    @Ninja
“TF aren’t you afraid of a domain seizure like torrent-finder?”

They may be looking for it. As a strictly news site with comments, they are well positioned to fight it well. Also with support of just about every other news website on the net. The Streisand Effect it would generate would not hurt either. The “new” domain in use while fighting this would be on Slashdot, TheRegister, Reddit, cnet, CNN…

  • Mr. Anon

It’s like a chess game now.

  • Trundle

Why would they go after TF? It’s a discussion we have here. People aren’t sharing files or links.

How are safe hosting services even being decided upon?

  • myg0t

Wow, really, the government needs to leave their noses out of online business like downloads yes, it might be “bad” but for music, why would you spend $20 that you need for food water and necessities just to spend it on an album with one hit on it. How about people realse songs that dont completely suck. For programs why even bother, it cost so much money just to get something on your computer just to maybe teach you something or fix your computer I doubt anyone really wants to pay 60.00 for norton anti-virus. the MPAA ICE and the Gov’t need to go on someplace and deal with shit that actually matters like Legalization, I thought USA was in debt, and they want to worry about the fucking internet. Way to go, honestly there’s pros and cons to getting things and enforcing something will only backfire at some point. The gov’t is a big bully and no one can step up to them because they run and hide behind some lame law, nothing but lazy cowards, and corrupt politions and just a bunch of people who have nothing else better to do besides harass innocent people on the internet way to go. They are pro.. not. *LEAVE US ALONE!*

The Government and some organizations are trying to take out our freedom, but they will never succeed. Long live the p2p community and also Torrentz.
